hello everyone, new to the forum
i notice in the tequila news there is lots of brands using some famous people for promotions like justin timberlake, patrick dempsey, hagar and neil. does this influence you to buy a product? it works great on kids and teenagers but i think it just costs me more money in the long run cuervo commercials - living notoriously well? anyone buy these products? or better question - are you influenced by the advertising? |

I'm the type of person that will research products when buying, so I could care less about who (or what) is tied to any product. I use the Internet mostly, public review sites, etc. It is pretty easy to differentiate web sites that were setup to promote one thing only, and have biased articles and reviews.
As a collector, I go after bottles that I most likely wouldn't as a consumer. Going to Tequila events, sampling, and talking with other aficionados is the best way to figure out what is considered tops IMHO. The Cuervo commercials are somewhat entertaining, but I would never go buy any Cuervo Gold... but millions of others are easily influenced.

For me, the use of a celeb to sell tequila, makes me question the quality and be a little more critical of the taste.
I have been drinking tequila for over 20 years and back then the only advertising was a little JC or Sauza and as we all know, Tequila back then had it's reputation for wildness and sickness, so I can see and understand the marketing behind changing the image of tequila in the past 10+ years ( starting w/Sammy ). If anything, the marketing strategies have helped create a very large selection of tequila rather good or bad.......mostly good

I'll admit a fancy bottle catches my eye, but I no longer make purchase decisions based on it.
When it came to Cabo and Patron, I wouldn't say I avoided them, but I wasn't in any rush to try them, just because of the commercialism. As it turns out both are decent tequilas, but neither ranks in my top 15-20. I did try Tres Rios for the heck of it because of the Vince Neil connection, but I did so skeptically. I was correct, its not a very good tequila. I havent seen Timberlake's 901 yet, but I'll try it, why not? |

I'm influenced by the public on tequila.net...for one, I do not have cable...so I don't catch those fancy commercials. I usually base my opinions on instincts, usually NOM's and brand reputation influence me the most. And I do not mean reputation by the general public...I mean by you guys on tequila.net through reviews and our convorsations. I will admit that bottles catch my eye and because of this, I have found some decent products that I would put in my top list...the most notable was Rey De Copas Reposado. BUT bottle presentation has kicked me in the butt in recent times as well...Hussongs and Penjamo Reposado Mixtos after doing no research and admiring the bottles. I paid 40.00 for the Hussongs mixto also
![]() 2 weeks ago I was looking for something new to try, I like to find tequila that are not listed and use my cell phone to check the NOM database. When I had never heard of anything from the Senor Frogs distillery, I purchased the blanco at 20 bucks to see what it was about. My liquor store down the street brought in only 3 bottles, I bought them all. I already tapped the first and half of another bottle with margaritas and shots....it can't be beat for the price. So all in all...I'm in the category of "sometimes" influenced by marketing gimmicks like bottles and brands (not usually influenced by celebs)...but I am mostly influenced by educated agave fans like you guys and dare myself to try stuff unheard of in my books when I can. [EDIT]...the marketing on the Dos Lunas site by Too Short is not only funny but its also entertaining. I feel that its a step up for a high quality brand to use that form of marketing. Its much better than hearing Lil Wayne on the radio talk about Patron like its his best friend.

I doubt I would ever buy anything that was promoted by Justin Timberlake.
I like the Dos XX campaign. Good writing. Tequila needs to break from the Cabo San Lucas, "I Got Sick Doing Shots of Cuervo during College" marketing. |

Personally, celebrity represention has never really been a factor in my purchases. Only one time, when I saw Sammy in an interview some years back, did I go out and buy a bottle of Cabo repo. I could tell by listening to him speak that he was truely passionate about his tequila and believed that he was putting his name behind a quality product. I know that Sammy also drank his tequila because it was quality and he was a true agave spirit lover. I find it hard to believe that a Justin Timberlake actually shares the same passion for his product. I may be wrong but I don't think I'll be buying a bottle of 901 any time soon unless I hear some glowing reviews from people I trust!
