Tezon Tequila Anejo

After doing the review of the blanco only a few days ago, I wanted to see how the natural process holds up in the extra aged product. While it is allowed to add things to tequila like caramel coloring and oak extract, I would assume that this one, because of the slow process in which it is made and the light color, does not use additives. Let's see how that process lends itself to añejo flavor.

Price: $50-60/bottle

Aroma: An inviting nose of cooked agave, ripe fruit and some green notes (mint).

Initial Taste: There's definite notes of the blanco flavor. Although it has been aged, the agave flavor is very up front with some light fruit and some earthiness.

Body: A medium to thin body. It has only a light sweetness for an añejo. The flavors are subtle, but they seem to work well together. There's light oak and pepper to go with the sweetness.

Finish: The green notes are stronger at the finish to be sure. The pepper isn't as strong as I would expect and the finish is medium length.

Tezón Añejo is (to me) a classic case of a good tequila that just seems to be overpriced. This is solid añejo is nice flavors. It drinks a bit more like a reposado, but the profile works well for those who want the natural agave flavors and some green notes. However, at $50+, this tequila is playing in some lofty company. If it was more in the $35-40 range, it would be a solid buy. But I feel like in the price range that it's at, it is overpriced. It's solid, just not good enough for me to want to dole out premium cash for it.

I picked this up for only $21.99/bottle plus shipping on shopperswines.com and for that price it's an absolute steal! I tried this with my brother and after our first sip we both said the same thing - it reminded us a lot of Patron's anejo (which we both enjoy). It's a nice, simple, crisp anejo with a good balance of agave and wood. It's got enough of a bite in the back of the throat to remind you it's tequila, which I actually like sometimes, although I do prefer Patron in that sense as it's just a touch smoother.

I didn't experience this being quite as complex as the last couple reviewers, but to each their own. Nice scents of pepper, honey, and a little smokey. The flavor is on the sweet side with notes of honey and caramel, but not overly stated. Pretty smooth finish where both the agave and oak are present.

As soon as I press submit I'm going to order a few more bottles just because it's a very good tequila at an even better price. At the price I've seen it go for on most sites, in the $40-50 range I think it's a decent tequila, but for under $30 including shipping I'd give it a "best value" vote any day!

I love this tequila. I loved scotch first and to me this is a scotch drinkers tequila. The nose is peppery-spicy with sweet undertones and a hint of smoke. The initial taste is smooth and sweet with some pepper. It's full-bodied and creamy with many different complex flavors that shift in your mouth with duration from pepper to sweet caramel to vanilla to smoke and oak and back to pepper before leaving your mouth with a smooth, long finish of tongue-tingling eucalyptus and smoked oak. I have yet to find a better tasting, sweet, highland region anejo. Maybe there is one out there but until I find it this is my anejo of choice.

I picked up a bottle of Tezon anejo after reading a favorable review in the Austin Chronicle. My wife and I drank it over a period of couple of months, mostly having an oz or two in a tequila glass before heading out for entertainment or football games. It's been a couple of weeks since I last drank any of this anejo, so I don't quite remember the aroma, but I do remember the taste and I had a very favorable impression. Initial taste is earth and agave with oak overtones, followed by a silky wash of caramel and vanilla. Smooth finish. The taste was great, but equally as important to me was that the buzz was quite clean, like that you would get from a quality vodka, only with the loco thing you get with tequila. Frankly, when drinking tequila, the alcohol high is just as important to me as the taste. Overall, this anejo ranks in the top quarter of tequilas that I have had and I have been a consumer of quality tequilas both in Texas and in Mexico for over twenty years. That makes me curious as to why my experience was so different than that represented by the previous review. Are there differences in the batches perhaps, or maybe just the tastes of the reviewers?

Tezon Anejo NOM 1111 Tasted on 4/19/07 at 9:45pm. I tried this tequila at El Patron Bar and Grill in Sacramento, CA and tasted it in a martini glass. While this bottle has a unique design, the tequilas quality versus price is the lowest out of any tequila I have rated. With a yellow golden color, this tequila has intense aromas of floral and earth. Other aromas include mild fruit and smoke. Due to the use of a martini glass (El Patron?s normal tequila glass) it was extremely hard to get any aroma from the tequila. The tequila has a oily mouth feel and on the first sip is sweet with moderate to mild bitterness. Tezon Anejo has intense aromas of earth followed by moderate to intense notes of chemicals, floral, and wood. With a medium to long duration of flavor, tastes of moderate agave and mild fruit and spice bring this tequila to a numbing finish. Tezon Anejo has received the rating of 84 points out of 100.
