Default When am I ready to review?

That's the question. I don't want to try to be a phony expert. I don't want to upset the true experts and aficionados on this site. I have hung out here for about a year. I have been to Mexico once and greatly enjoyed the juice. I make it a point to try as many new brands as I can. I attend regular tastings at a local mexican kitchen and tequila lounge here in Roseville, CA. I don't think I can easily distinguish subtle differences in taste, like is it woody or tasting like nuts or vanilla. It's either smooth or more alcohol tasting or bitter than others. So what qualifies me to write a review or is it "anything goes?"

All levels of consumers and aficionados are encouraged to review tequilas, this provides well rounded scores from people with all different palates. If you can describe your experience with the review, all the better.

Go for it...

Yes I agree with Mr. Agave wholeheartedly...just go for it! The bottom line is that all of our palates differ. What I might think is a great tequila, may be just average for Mr. A's palate and you may not like it at all. Also, I have found that the more reviews that I do, the more it helps to refine my palate. I am now able to pick up many hidden nuances regarding nose, taste, mouthfeel, finish, etc., that I wasn't able to distinguish quite as well in the beginning of my tequila journey. Hey, like they say..."practice makes perfect!" Good luck!

"One shot, OK, two shots feeling woozy, three shots, I'm definitely tasting the alcohol, fourth and fifth shot, that girl's not looking so fat. Yesterday I couldn't even spell afishanado, now I are one!

Seriously, if your making an honest effort and you follow Mr. A's guide, you can't go wrong, or be wrong. It's your review and personal opinion. Just remember to make it informative (helpful).

I've been wanting to review as well. I've tried well over 50 now, but there's no way I could go back and comment on all of them at this point. I may have to start with what I have in stock and try to review as if it is the first time I've tasted them. Wait...does this mean I have to try Patron again?

I've noticed that some favorites on the forum don't get stellar reviews on the main website. I think it pays to check both places when considering a purchase.

For fun, I ask my wife to pour my tequila without me knowing which one, and I have to guess. I know this doesn't answer your question, but it's fun testing oneself to see how much I know 'blindly'.

One suggestion only:

There have been times when I have sampled a tequila, and thought, "This isn't what I expected it to be."

Several times I have been hasty in submitting a review.

I now take the position of carefully sampling a tequila at least three times before reporting on it.

When I read some reviews with "hints of this" and "notes of that," I have to wonder if these people are on something other than alcohol. Here's one of those reviews of a tequila I like:

94 • Espolon Tequila Blanco $24.99.
Clear. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, dried tropical fruits, delicate pickling spices, and creamy meringue. Super smooth and silky with a dryish medium-to-full body. Graceful tropical flower blossom, dates, minerals, and subtle roasted pepper notes illuminate the finish. Incredibly clean, pure and elegant.

Waxy honeycomb, graceful tropical flower blossom ..... give me a break!
Here's my review: Smells good, tastes good, doesn't burn, and the price is right.

That is some guy in marketing earning his keep. I personally, can usually pick out the vanilla, caramel, pepper/spice, oak and chard smells and tastes. other than that I have a hard time with some of the other descriptions as noted in your post.

I also agree with deedub and it is better to sample the tequila at a few different times to form your review.....just what you had to eat prior to a tasting can change the taste of the tequila.

Rather read your review, makes infinitely more sense for one thing, I'm looking for a review not a greeting card.

On that note I have done exactly one, count 'em, one review...

Not real quick to remember which one, maybe Sino 'cuz it's(was?) staffed by nothin' but super hot chicks in bikinis and stilleto heels or maybe it was the 1800 Silver black label (101 proof!) which lead me to believing the crap about Sino or something like that...

Edit: Ugh, I just reread my review, must have been doing homework for a creative writing class or something...

I have sampled well over 100 brands, there is no benchmark, jump in!
