Default Heading to Mexico (playa) suggestions?

Goin on a family trip and I will definately plan on bringing back a few bottles that I wouldnt be able to find here in the states, or at least find easily. Looking to top out at about $70 per bottle. Any suggestions of what to look for.

Some of my favororites that I get in the states are Corazon, Corzo, Herradura, Don Julio. I like all varieties, but prefer the anejo's. Hook a brother up so when I come back from being with the family, I can drink away the nightmares....

Its going to depend on what part of Mexico you're going to . Does play mean Playa de Carmen or does it mean Playa, the chain liquor stores that I've been in in PV. You'll definitely have a better selection in P.V., than in Playa.
Some to think about would be Tapatio, Los Abuelos, Centinela (Can be found @ BevMo in Cali but other wise hard to find), Tres Mujeres, or Arette.

May I also suggest Cava Antiqua Anejo? It usually runs anywhere from $35.00 to $45.00 in Mexico and is a superb tequila! IMHO it is very well balanced with just the right blend of oak and smoke with intense agave from start to finish! The brown jug type bottle with leather label and drawstring is a super nice bottle to bring back for display as well. I personally never come home from Mexico without one!

I totally agree with you on that pick (no pun intended), I picked up a bottle of the Cava when I went to Cancun last November. There is a store that has a decent selection of tequila in Playa, but I don't remember the name of it. The store is on the main drag for tourist shops and has a bench out in front with a bronze statue of a guy in a big 'Pancho Villa' type hat. The place was on the expensive side for Mexico but still better prices than here in the States. The store did have tequila in its name, so it should not be hard to find.

Default PDC liquor stores

I was in PDC over xmas 2010. On the main drag, 5th Avenue, there are lots of choices of tequila stores.

raiderj16 is referring to Hacienda Tequila Factory, which is half tequila store, half tourist shop. The other two places I liked were Playa Mart and the beach store at the very end of Fifth Avenue (off of a hidden courtyard). These were the stores with the largest selection of better tequilas. There are certainly other tourist shops/drug stores with the more popular stuff.

On the main highway, by Constituyentes, is Covi Liquors - I went there having scoured the internet for PDC tequila shopping tips, and was somewhat disappointed. It has recently been renovated and there was not the huge selection I had read about. It did have Clase Azul Platino which I had been looking for with no success, so I was glad to get that for 70 USD; imagine my horror when I found the Cancun Duty Free had TWO for $110USD. Aarrrgh!

My favourite place however is Tequila Town, on Constituyentes next to Gran Porto Real/The Royal. One dollar Coronas, a walk-in humidor, a large selection of good tequilas and knowledgeable staff. They also sell 50 ml bottles, which are nice if you aren't sure about committing to a full bottle.
I had a snifter of El Gran Jubileo anejo for 10 USD, and the young lady at the store also recommended Alma de Mujer, a nice anejo for about 35. I picked up Los Tres Tonos Anejo for 43.

Casa Tequila no longer exists on Fifth Avenue (store is empty, sign is crumbling) - and there is no more Cofradia boutique. I had read of these places online but as of Dec 2010 they were not findable.

The CUN Duty Free had some nice specials - a 2pk of JC RDLF in 500 ml each, the Platino and Anejo in a case. La Pinta Pomegranate 2/40 - 2 oz of that with 1 oz of Citronge and juice of one lime makes a nice marg.

Hope this helps!
