So my bro calls me last week and says this guy he works with helps coordinate some beer event and asks if I want to go meet him and check out their whole process. I said sure, it would be cool to see how they run a beer competition. I don't drink much beer, an occasional Tecate now and then, so I had no idea what this event was all about.
We meet over at one of the Coors distribution centers here in Denver and entered their storage warehouse. There were rows and rows of pallets of beers from around the world. It turns out that these guys run the World Beer Cup, and they have close to 3000 entries this year, and these entries need to be sorted into 91 different categories. So we spent the last 4 hours sorting and boxing these "Yeast Samples" and it was quite an experience to see these guys talking and looking at the brands as each box was cracked. Once everything is sorted, the beer gets shipped to San Diego this year for the show, including a tasting competition with 125 judges from around the world. Being a new guy there tonight allowed me to take one case of assorted extra beers home, a nice gesture to the volunteer workers for their sorting expertise. If I go back tomorrow, 2 cases. I'll take a photo tomorrow and show you guys what I bring home, I don't see one recognizable bottle in my box from tonight. Maybe you guys will know some of the brands.
And yes, I talked Tequila to quite a few people. There were many that have had some good tequilas lately and were excited to hear more about Tequila.net and the Agave Spirits Challenge.
Check out
www.BeerTown.org for more information. These guys also run the Great American Beer Festival here in Denver in October, so I might have to go to that and brush up on my "beer talk".
