Default What do you do with your "mistake" tequila?

Everyone knows I love tequila; some folks even bring me a bottle back from their trip, unasked. What do they bring? Jose Cuervo Especial. Yeah, a mixto. I have since learned to fake sincerity (if you can fake sincerity, you've got it made!) and freeze my face into a mask of "Oh, tequila! You know I love tequila!". My eye balls ache from having to fight back the roll, and the gag reflex starts to make itself known. Why, God, WHY?

I've got some Cuervos and Sauzas just gathering dust, and my question is: are there alternative uses for tequila, or do you know a way I could turn my bottles of "meh" into at least one bottle of "Awesome!"? Or am I just plain stuck?

I have a bottle of Tenampa that I thought I'd try tonight - ummm, there's a reason why I can't find a review online. Last night was a party of one with Espolon repo and a high end Meyer lemon Key lime marg mix with Cointreau - and all day long I thought I'd set that on repeat. Espolon all gone, and moved on to Tenampa and it tastes.... weird. The mixer is so good that it makes the meh tequila taste okay, somewhat honeyed, but life is too short to drink bad tequila, IMHO.

What have you done in the past when you have found that you and a bottle of tequila just don't see eye to eye? (Or is it Penca to Penca?)

I actually just poured out an almost full bottle of 100 Años and recycled the glass bottle. One of the few sip and spit out tequilas I've ever tasted.

On the other hand, some friends recently returned from a cruise to Mexico and brought back unsolicited a saran wrapped bottle of El Tesoro Añejo for me knowing that I like tequila. You just need to train your friends to say "no" to mixto.

I found that blending several of these "mistake" tequilas with El Ultimo Agave añejo produced some pretty tasty results. I wouldn't waste it on a mixto but if you have something 100% that just doesn't agree with you, it's worth a shot, especially if the offender cost more than the EUA.

Serve those 'gifts' to your same friends when they come over to visit. You can also save them for when someone comes over and says, "I just want a shot." Or you can use them for comparison - like an educational tool.

Serve it up as straight shots with lime and salt, or 7up poppers at parties.

I can honestly say that Sauza's 100 anos tequila cannot be masked in a margarita! No matter what you add to it, it still comes out tasting like "100 anuses!"

We use the skunky stuff in our marinade for the chorizo. That is how I got rid of all my Trago.
