Thumbs up Brand New To Tequila

I am brand new to the world of Tequila. Yes, I did the shots of Cuervo in College, but in terms of this new journey for me, I am brand new.

My first step is to educate myself on the very very basics, and I am hopeful that this forum can help to educate me.

Let me start with a very basic question.

Specifically: Jose Cuervo Silver and Gold

If Silver is a 'Mixto' 51/49, and Gold is made from Silver and aged, then is Gold also a 'Mixto', as the silver that is used in Gold is only 51/49?

Why don't they call Silver a Joven as well, like they do Gold?

Lots of definitions 'mixto' and 'joven' that I am trying to get my hands around.

Thanks for your help on this one.

My first baby step!

Michael,
Welcome to the land of tequila and to the board. If you look on the FAQ's page you will see the definitions of the different tequila classifications. You will get your most of your questions answered there. Good luck on your new journey with tequila! BTW look at FAQ's page link that is on the home page of the site and not the forums site.

There are Joven and Gold products out there that are both 100% and mixtos, so it is best to always look for the "100%" tagline when purchasing.

Hey Micheal! Welcome! Just wait... tequila gets more and more exciting with each passing day, week, month, year... you'll see!

I've been coming to the same party (tequila) for years and in no way is that depressing!

Glad you are wanting to learn more about it. We need more educated consumers of this amazing spirit!

Default Is this the best way??

I suppose another way that I can tell if a Tequila is a 'mixto' or not, is if the label has the 100% blue agave on it.

Any label that does not have the 100% blue agave by default would have to be a 'mixto' is that correct?

Si.

But...

100% blue agave on the label does not always guarantee a good spirit.

Default Correct you are

I agree totally, and I suppose there are many times that a Mixto tastes better than 100% blue agave, depending on the blend and mixture of the tequilas with each other.

But the odds do go up a little!
