Default Can't go wrong with brands

I'm constantly faced with the questions from newbies as to what tequilas to try, as I'm sure all of you are. My typical answer has become, based on what people might like and be able to find fairly easiy has been "you can't go wrong with El Tesoro or Don Julio on any level". Although I have others I may prefer, most of them are harder to find. What do you think (and if you live in California, remember a lot of us may not be able to get that). And are those two brands in as many markets as I think?

Aloha, Rick

I too get asked what to buy from people who are not up to speed on tequila......the same as I ask others about wine.
My first suggestion is always Don Julio.
You can buy it just about anywhere and depending on what they are doing with the tequila and their budget.......Don Julio covers it all.

The next suggestions:
Chinaco
Don Fulano
Revolucion

I agree, Don Julio has all the bases covered. I love it and its everywhere I go..

El Tesoro is another go to for me, regardless of the category, and its ALMOSt all everywhere, not quite as available as Don Julio, but close..

I agree with everyone. Don Julio is the route to go. Reguardless of the store, if they stock tequila...Don Julio should be there.

El Tesoro is another common one. Its slightly pricier than Don Julio around here.

I find that ET is too flavourful for the newbie, especially the Anejo. Something everyone will eventually love but not always for virgin taste buds.

I agree with DJ, but not as good as it used to be, last time I had it the Blanco was starting to get yeastie, like they are trying to speed up fermintation a bit too much.

All the newbies that have tried my tequilas, agree on one brand: Casa Noble.

Interesting point regarding DJ blanco. I need to research/understand this 'yeastie' description so I understand it better.

And now that u mention it wichie13, I can see how u say that about ET. One brand that all my non-tequila friends agree on is 4 Copas.. What do u guys think? Its just so pricey though, so its not as appealing.

Don Julio is easy to find and is certainly a quality product.
4 Copas is what I drink most myself, so I recommend that.
I also drink a bit of Fortaleza, but that can be difficult to find.
Chinaco is pretty good all around for the money.
AsomBroso is really popular in bars here in LA, and I like it - especially for beginners. Light, smooth, not intimidating.

My favorite recommendation is Casa Noble. I can't speak about availability outside California, but it is easy to find here. For those willing to look, Fortaleza is a great choice.
