Tequila AsomBroso Vintage Extra Anejo - Limited Edition

AsomBroso 11-Year Añejo. Its purebred quality is the pinnacle of century-old manufacturing traditions virtually unheard of outside of the Tequila Elite of Mexico.  This is the first and only 11-year añejo tequila to be sold in the world. While there is no Vintage nomenclature for tequila as regulated by the Mexican CRT (the official Tequila Regulatory Council), for all intents and purposes, this is a Classic Vintage tequila from Ricardo Gamarra, Founder and President of California Tequila, LLC. This Vintage 11-year añejo tequila was rested in 220 liter French Oak casks, is certified by the CRT, and its offering will be the first of its kind outside of a select "inner circle" in Mexico.

Over two decades ago, Enrique Fonseca Sr., a renown agave grower and tequila maker, had an idea... to take his best organically grown agave and use it to make a special longer aged, extra special tequila for his friends.” After a ten-year growth period, he hand selected the 100% Blue Agave plants to become this special tequila. He then took his freshly distilled premium silver tequila and sealed a cache of it into a few small French oak casks as part of his experiment in making a longer aged Añejo.

This 11-year añejo tequila is a true competitor to the world’s finest aged spirits that represents the inextricable ties between Mexican Culture and tequila.
And, it fits well with Enrique Fonseca Sr.’s dream of creating a Superb sipping tequila for his close friends to enjoy.

The new AsomBroso “Vintage” 11-Year aged Tequila is available in limited quantity and in limited distribution. It is bottled in a special Limited Edition "Bella Age", hand-blown bottle that retains the now familiar trademarked AsomBroso decanter bottle shape. Estimated retail price is between $900 and $1000 per bottle.

AsomBroso Vintage Extra Anejo (11yr age). Tasted 8/19/08, 1:30pm at Pueblo Viejo in Hollywood from a snifter. I paid $100 for the shot.

The tequila is amber/brown in color and the aroma is very sweet. Intense floral and vanilla scents fill the nose. Secondary aromas include caramel or maybe even butterscotch.

AsomBroso 11yr is very mellow upon entry. It has a medium to oily feel in the mouth - very much in contrast to my expectation of a heavier syrupy consistency. It is VERY sweet with no hint of bitterness. There is more retention of agave notes than I expected, but it is in no way a foreground flavor.

The flavor in this tequila screams vanilla, wood, and caramel. Even with 11 years in the barrel, I have to question the possible use of vanilla extract here as a mellowing agent. I don't know how they could achieve this result without it. It finishes with a long duration of flavor and virtually no trace of alcohol.

This is far and away the smoothest tequila I have ever tried. It is also one of the sweetest. AsomBroso 11yr drinks like a desert and would be at home with the finest cognacs or ports for after dinner. I have to say that this tequila is a triumph and was a big surprise for me.

The availability may put this tequila out of reach for some and the price may put it out of reach for even more. But if you have the opportunity to try this tequila, do yourself a favor and go for it.
