It's between two places for me. Merida in the Yucatan is in the heart of Mayan country. A beautiful city of colonial architecture, memorable restaurants, friendly people (as in all Mexico), & excellent local beer available only in the Yucatan, not to mention the tequila. Within 1/2 hour from la playa which serves camarones every which way but live! A wonderful destination & base to discover the mystery of the Mayan culture.
Zihuatanejo. This resplendent town 150 miles up the coast from Acapulco in the state of Guerrero epitomizes a Mexican fishing village from thirty years ago. Fortunately Ixtapa, just 20 minutes over the pass, attracts the bulk of visitors to the area. Zihuatanejo is so laid back that the best restaurants are found on the beach, Playa La Ropa, under a cabana. The town is small enough that walking is still the preferred method of travel. This is the best way to absorb the local culture. Langostinos, Margaritas, Cerveza Pacifico, & Cuban cigars. Life does not get any better than this!!! |

The only trip I took to Mexico was when I went to South Padre Island on the Texas coast. My dad and mom decided it would be fun to go over the border into what I think is the city of Matamoras(sp?) which is right accross the border. With my dads excellent geography skills we entered through a different gate and a few minutes later a village that wasnt even on our map. After asking a couple people where the hell we were we got directed to a road that was at least paved....after driving for 30 minutes we ended up in another town, a bit larger but with a whole lot of hispanic men staring us down on the street corners. Keep in mind, we were not a paved road anymore and couldnt see a sign of american life anywhere. After freaking a bit and trying to eat at a cafe that had no employee that spoke english we finally found our first road sign that said we were quite a bit aways from where we wanted to be. To make a long story short, my first trip to mexico was no fun at all

Akumal in the Yucatan for my bunch. Nice small village on the coast where the siesta is still very much cherished. Dig your toes in the sand and sip good tequila, la buena vida!!
I hope one day to get on one of those trips to Jalisco. |

When this land-locked Colorado boy goes to Mexico, he understandably gravitates to la playa. However an old fraternity brother & friend of mine recently moved to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato which will be our next trip. We plan on driving from Ojinaga, bypassing Juarez, through Chihuahua continuing south.
