Default Why not just buy an añejo tequila and skip reposados and blancos?

I've been a beer advocate for years. I'll drink my fair share of liquor here and there. I also love good tequila and whiskey. My buddy was just out in Vegas and tried the Don Julio 1942. He said it was one of the best tequilas he's ever tried. I've always wanted to buy a bottle, as I like having cool/rare things! I also love Don Julio's Añejo tequila!

So, I was doing some research and found this site. I was reading a lot of Tequila Joe's reviews and it brought me to a question. I always keep Don Julio Añejo and/or El Tesoro Añejo in my bar. The first premium tequila I bought was a few years back, which was Cabo Wabo Reposado. The second was Milagro Reposado. Since then, I've only stocked añejos and usually a bottle of Two Fingers and Sauze Conmemorativo for drinks or to hand out to free loaders!

Personally, I like the Julio and Tesoro añejos much more than I've liked the reposados. After reading some reviews, I've seen a few higher rated reposados. So my noobish question is, "Why buy reposado and blanco tequilas when you can buy añejos?" I know a few of you will be able to give me some great information! So, bring it on!!!

Why not just date blonds, or just red heads?

Why not just have a hamburger instead of filet mignon or plank seared trout?

As far as I'm concerned, one does not necessarily replace the others. I'm a big repo fan, I find the anejos have too 'woody' a taste sometimes but that didn't keep me from buying the Don Julio. I also think some of the blancos are too harsh and young but I sure enjoyed the Asom Broso. Much like life, everything is different than everything else. I know it sounds silly but life IS like a box of chocolates sometimes, and sometimes you have to try alot of them before you find the chocolate buttercream, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the nougats until you find them.

Even though Im a huge blanco fan, Im always down to try a Reposado or a Añejo. Why should I limit myself? Different moods call for different tequilas!

It depends on my mood. I love a blanco, especially when I am drinking straight and also making margaritas. The young tequila goes best with margs in my opinion. As you step up your game to quality branded blancos, you will notice that some flavors really stand out. In particular for me, agave...it has to have a wonderful agave flavor without so much spice it burns the throat. I smell for sweet smells like vanilla, honey, nuts....etc. Blancos arent my favorite though.

Something interesting, my "turn on" for tequila was also Cabo Wabo Reposado. Its some good stuff but once again, you start finding premium, ultra premium and collector tequilas and they put Cabo to shame. I still love Wabo but check out that recent thread about Reposados....1921, Milagro (SBR), El Tesoro, Casa Noble, Arette....etc are great brands also and in my opinion, a lot better value than Cabo Wabo. Reposados are my particular favorite because they have very different qualities...you can find some aged 2 months and some aged 364 days like Casa Noble, and that goes down like a light anejo.

As for your main question of why not just buy an anejo? Well for me, a quality anejo goes down and hits the palate like a fine scotch or cognac. I love the wood flavors but many many cheaper anejos taste too much like a scotch and less like true agave. They are still 100% if they say it on the bottle but the woods brings in all sorts of new flavors that are sometimes too intense for me. Don Julio 1942 is a good example of a GREAT anejo....if you have tried brands like El Mayor and many more you will notice some of what I'm talking about. You really just have to find what your tastes likes and go for it.

My favorites are reposados, but I love aged tequilas so anejo's are next on the list....but on a good day I cant get enough of some of my favorite blancos.

Let me know if you'd like any ideas, everyone has different favorites on here and most of us are all willing to help in any way we can.

As an anejo drinker I have often asked the same question and if money was no object I would have the best anejo pouring from faucets in my house. Unfortunately I'm not that rich.   But I think you are wasting an anejo in a mixed drink, I think a reposado or blanco work best in those.  As I've been getting more and more into tequila I have found that depending on the food I'm eating or the time of day or season of the year that I'll sip a blanco or a reposado. It's very interesting to try flights from the same brand and see how it goes from blanco to reposado to anejo and even extra anejo.  Don't limit yourself and enjoy!!!

I agree with gsars1, dont limit yourself to a particular tequila. If you just drank anejos for the rest of your life; you'd probably lose the essence of a bold agave tequila (which is found in your best blancos)

If you have the money, order the 6 pack cases off of shoppersvineyard. You save on shipping and can pick 6 of any bottles. I never have the money to do it but you could get 2 blancs, 2 repos, 2 anejos....for probably the same price you'd pay for 4 bottles at your local liquor store. I can never buy that much at a time but its a great way to get started sampling if you can find some deals....check around to all the online stores though. Fina Estampa was on sale at one point in time for 22.99 for the anejo! I cant find it for less than 49.99 around Waco Texas!

So what's the deal with the six pack case? Is it just saving on shipping? Or, is there actually a discount percentage for ordering six bottles?

I just purchased 6 bottles of DJ 1942 at a cost of $75 per bottle, no sales tax and free shipping. The best price local, was $90 cash.
