Default Mexico-only Tequila Suggestions

Any suggestions for a nice repo or blanco from Mexico, not available elsewhere? I am looking at lower-priced juice, under $30. I hear great things about Tapatio but don't know the price. All suggestions welcome. My taste runs to Clase Azul Repo, Los Tres Tonos Anejo, anything Casa Noble if that helps you.

I picked up Manana reposado and anejo and La Cofradia Cristal Anejo.

I just got back from Cancun last night, so I havent had a chance to try them. I'll let you know what I think.
All 3 bottles were less than $35ea USD in Cancun

I liked El Gran Viejo Extra Anejo , La Europa had it in the mid-$20s, other stores had it low $30s, Tequila Hacienda was the highest in the low $40s. Compared to the US prices for the regular Anejo, this one is a steal.

Depending on where you shop, Tapatio is generally priced in that range. Any of Tap's offerings are guaranteed to please! Tapatio is currently available only in Mexico but will soon be available in California as well. Centinela Reposado and Anejo is very tasty juice as well and would probably suit your palate based on the brands you mentioned above. Also Jason, Manana reposado and anejo and La Cofradia Cristal Anejo are all available in the US...primarily in California but I believe in other areas as well. If you would, let me know your thoughts on Manana. It has always been an enjoyable tequila for me...particularly the anejo.

I had seen that Manana was available in CA and WA, but thats a small market area , plus the price differences I saw between US and MX pricing might make it worth it.
The La Cofradia Cristal Anejo I couldnt find when checking the usual online retailers.

I'm still recovering from my vacation, but I'll crack them all open at some point this weekend and give them a try. The description of the Manana line sounds promising. Its good to hear a positive review.

The Tapo suggestion is a good one. I would also look for the Baluarte repo. It is supposedly available here in California but i have not found it yet. I got it at the Duty Free in the PV airport and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Does anyone know if Tapatio is available at Cancun airport Duty Free? My friend is bringing me two bottles but can only purchase in the airport. Wondering if Jasonrm72 can remember some of the selections at DF? I know they always have a cartload of Milagro, Cuervo, Sauza, etc. (Um... no thanks...) Wish there was a place online with the current prices-I'd be especially interested in Clase Azul (both B and R), Fortaleza, and La Pinta Pomegranate, which makes an awesome marg.

Let us know how the Manana works out - it was 24 USD for the blanco, 27 for the repo when I was in PDC in Dec 2010. It was very popular as it was a reasonable price and a cool bottle. At the same time, Aha Toro had shrinkwrapped 50 ml bottles of blanco to their bottles, which made it a great buy as well.

I don't recall seeing Tapatio but I wasn't looking for it either. The Clase Azul Repo was $75/per bottle, if you buy 2 you get a free Clase Azul bag. That $75 is a deal compared to Cancun pricing. Virtually everyone jacked their price up to $99USD, except La Eurpoa which was $72-ish (depending on the peso/USD market).

Maracame Anejo also went up, $72 USD at the DF.

I didnt look too hard at prices since I had already reached my bottle limit and wasnt going to be able to purchase anything anyway.

I tried my Manana Anejo and Repo last night.

The Anejo was first and the smell got me right off the bat. I could swear it had a similar scent to a tequila infusion i had in Cancun made with Rocotillo Chiles: sweet with some heat. On first taste, i couldnt shake the sweet chili flavor, it bit the sides of the tongue, very nice. It finished with a dull heat, again more pepper heat than alcohol. Very interesting, I liked it alot.

The repo had a similar sweet smell, but more agave than chili. The flavor was also very similar to the anejo but with less pepper and a little less bite to the tongue, and leaves with a tinge of heat.

I liked both, but due to my tastes, I personally would just stick with the Anejo. I liked it more and the repo wasnt different enough to warrant purchasing a second bottle.

I bought their combo pack: 1 ea of the repo and anejo, 375ml for $30. I bought it without taste testing, just on the recommendation of the sales guy, and it was cheap enough where if it didnt work out, it didnt really matter. I now wish I had tried them ahead of time because I would have bought a 750ml of the Anejo instead. But the repo is good and will make a nice addition to my empty bottle collection.

Hey Jason try revisting the Manana anejo another time. If you have an oversized snifter, treat yourself to another generous pour and swirl it and let it open up a bit before you sample it again. Just out of curiosity see if it doesn't soften up the heat and bring out more of the agave. OBTW...Manana is available for purchase online however the anejo tends to be priced a bit too high...usually in the mid $50's range. The blanco is in the high $30's. Then when you tack on the shipping it becomes an expensive proposition. That's why I usually pick up a couple of bottles when I am in Cozumel. A couple of years ago I believe I paid only $22 for the blanco and $32 for the anejo...both 750ml.
