Default Prices in Mexico

I'm planning a trip at the end of the year to the Jalisco area for tours and such. My question is, are prices for some of the top shelf juices (real, gpb, herradura ss, chinaco negro, etc) in Mexico better than in the states? I'm hoping to bring back a bottle or two if i can find a good deal.

One matter to keep in mind is that many of the high-volume distillers are marketing their products for the Mexican market at 38% down to 35% alcohol, 35% being the lowest allowed by law. US and CAnadian importers mostly require that the spirit be 40%, and the difference is very noticeable. Many smaller distillers offer their products at the usual 40%. Just be sure to check the labels to avoid later disappointment.

A lot of high-end extra añejos like the one you mentioned are not really produce for the Mexican market. It's not what I buy when I am there, so I'm not sure, but I'd say you're as likely to find a slightly lower price as you are a higher price. When brands like Patrón and Partida were produced only for export, they were re-imported and sold to rich Mexicans at a higher (duty- and tax-added price). This may be the case for some of the stuff you mention.

There are bargains to be had all over though if you keep your eyes open.

Hope this helps - the 5th Avenue price in Dec/10 in Playa del Carmen for Grand Centenario Leyenda was 167 USD, and it's 299 online (give or take) from online US spirit distributors. Rey Sol was 179 USD and ranges from 239-299 online. So not bad savings. I bought Casa Noble Single Barrel Anejo (black bottle with silver knob and painted detail) for 108 USD but have seen it cheaper online by about seven dollars.

Enjoy your trip - it's the same trip on my bucket list!
