Default Chicago Tequila

What restaurants and tequila bars are must stops during my upcoming stay in Chicago?

I'm embarrassed to say I got nada listed under bars and stores on the map for Chicago.

Check this post for a few spots...

Chicago, IL

The answer is apparently slim and none. Thanks, Darren.

Binny's is a chain in Chicago that has a nice selection of tequilas -- they have Rey Sol and Chinaco Negro (the high end stuff) as well as La Pinta Pomegranate, Chamucos, Casa Noble, and Arette. How do I know this? Those are the ones on my "to buy" list!

Check out their site at binnys.com. Over 25 stores.

Go Hawks!

In agreement with ML. Binnys would probably be your best bet. Every other liquor store has the usual stuff: Cuervo gold, 1800, and the top shelf consisting of Don Julio and Patron. And down, biting your ankles, is everyone's favorite: Montezuma. You'll be able to find a better variety at Binnys.

There was an amazing restaurant with an impressive tequila selection, but i believe it closed down. The name is on the tip of my tongue. I think it was called Agave.

Here is a brand new restaurant that just opened in Chicago. It is owned by Jason Lerner and Executive Chef/Partner Alvaro Chavez: www.mazaazul.com. The early reviews on this restaurant have been FANTASTIC!

Wife and I are planning a return trip to Chicago and will check out the restaurant, Jim. Binny's is indeed the only store with any kind of a selection. Have yet to check out the suburbs where the liquor tax is less. City of Chicago raised there's about a year ago.

It's not just Chicago's liquor tax, the state of Illinois taxes at a rate of $8.55 per gallon- the highest in the nation! Binny's is great, although I wish they hadn't acquired the other big chain (Sam's) a couple of years ago to keep things a bit more competitive among the big guys here. There are some 'boutique' bottle shops, but none I could recommend specifically for tequila that aren't overpriced.

You really should check out the restaurant scene if you can. Chicago is full of great restaurants. For tequila sampling, there are a lot of really good Mexican restaurants, many with great house margaritas and tequila selections, and a fair number of BYOB places where you bring your own as well. Do a Yelp search and see what will be near you and see if some reviews/recommendations match what you're looking for.

A couple of places we keep going back to are Mayan Palace and El Mariachi Tequla Bar and Grill. Masa Azul has a wide tequila list and is on my to do list
