I could've sworn one of the videos on here showed a distillery washing them, but I could be mistaken.

Some distilleries do, most don't...

Typically they discard the first runoff from the oven as that is the outer wax of the agave, dirt, etc. as it is cooked off.

Ok, so maybe some distilleries wash their agave before cooking them, but of the distilleries that I have been to I have not seen or even heard of them washing the agave before loading the ovens.

Now, if we could just find a distillery that would be willing to do a run with "organic" agave and "chemically treated" agave to see if there is a difference in taste. Maybe when I win $100,000,000...but until then I will leave you all with this question--why is it that tequila that was produced before the shortage, plauge, boom, heavy use of pesticides, and the dumping of vinazas in the fields tastes better than it does now? And that's with all the producers saying that the process is the same now as it was "then".

Hmmm, interesting that they go through this step while most other distillers don't. I wonder if the ones that get the organic rating bother to do this. Probabaly not.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Don't forget to consider the farm, not just the product when you see that "organic" label on tequila, or any of the other food groups for that matter.

Think about the soil management, weed control, farm workers' health, nutrient leeching, biodiversity, composting, and ALL the other organisms involved in the process of labeling ANYthing "organic, before you bitch about how ridiculous it is. On the other hand, tequila from China is probably cheaper...

Cool first post huh?
