Tequila Don Julio Anejo sampled for the first time 10/13/08 from a Riedel glass. NOM 1449. Clear with a fairly light golden yellow color. Body is on the thin to medium side. Nothing overpowering about the the smell with milder elements of smokey wood, pepper, carmel, and vanilla. Seemed to me a rather youthful anejo. It has mild heat and tingle with slightly bitter but sweet tastes of butter, spice, and wood on the tongue. A medium duration finish with a pleasing balance of toasty oak and earthy green agave. I never did smell or taste much in the way of alcohol. Not a standout tequila, more middle of the road. It doesn't quite reach the level of better anejos in intensity but none the less a satisfying and enjoyable anejo. Presentation is unique Don Julio line, but plain. I have no complaints or problems with this afforable anejo.

Bought Don Julio NOM-1449 at Costco last yr, paid $55 for 750 ml. Recently had a couple oz.s for this review from a big shot glass. Bottle is not a reason to buy, although it is complete with info you expect from a quality product and the top seals nicely. Amber in color and leaves some legs. Nice earthy nose with caramel and a bit of fruit in there. Medium mouth feel and the barrel starts to come in a bit. Goes down smooth, has a bit of heat in the finish and an oak/spice tingle is left on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Over all very nice, complete, everything there you would expect but nothing "extra". I am indifferent to the presentation. There are other Anejo's I prefer for the $. Don J. has been collecting dust for quite some time and I don't see it changing anytime soon. 88 overall.

A good staple tequila, makes a great drink and nice in a snifter too. Still affordable and can taste both agave and wood, with a light sweetness in the nose and taste.

What more can I say that hasn't already been said?

Don Julio Anejo is a very good, all around sipping tequila. It's not the best, and it's not the cheapest, but it is a very good tequila that has earned its reputation honestly.

I have my personal favorites, but this sipping tequila is one that I keep on hand for when company is over. The nose, taste and finish are pleasing and the name is known to most--even those who may not drink tequila on a regular basis. With that combination, it's hard to beat when sharing with friends.
