Topped with a Pewter cap and stored in a fine wooden case hand-made by the awarded artisan Fernando Tanaka.

A True Masterpiece ~

Clase Azul Ultra Extra Anejo NOM 1416 Tasted on 5/1/07 at 6:00pm. I tried this tequila at a release party at Vessel in San Francisco and tasted it in a champagne glass. While this bottle has a unique design and comes with a wooden box, it is the tequilas quality versus price that harms this tequilas rating. In the quality versus price section of the rating sheet this tequila received a below average score. It is hard to justify $1,700 a bottle. With an amber brown color, this tequila has intense aromas of caramel, vanilla, fruit, and floral. Other aromas include hints of earth and spice. The tequila has a heavy mouth feel and on the first sip is sweet and syrupy with no bitterness. Clase Azul Ultra Extra Anejo has numerous arrays of flavors due to its minimum of 3 years of aging. However, this tequila was lacking agave. I only thought there was a moderate to mild amount of agave. Intense flavors of caramel and vanilla are followed by moderate notes of fruit. With a long duration of flavor, tastes of mild floral bring this tequila to a numbing finish. Clase Azul Ultra Extra Anejo has received the rating of 95 points out of 100 and would have been higher if not for the quality versus price section of the rating sheet.

Okay so here it is, the excitement leading up to this tasting, was awesome, the guy who presented the tasting, kinda didn't know what he was talking about, his notes were way off from mine and others in our group, We also tasted the new Cabo Uno, which didn't do as well, but back to Ultra, i was initially mesmerized by the color, it looked so rich in the reidel, the nose was beautiful, aromatic of that of a Bordeaux barrel, with a real sweet smoke scent, really nice, the initial taste was well, kinda like my dad would put it "salta 'patras" which in english means jump back! it hit kinda strong but once it sat in your mouth for a sec, the body gave in to a rich smooth texture, with a wonderful finish, not too harsh, but could've been slightly tweeked, with maybe a little citrus, and vanilla combination. The price, well i think we all know that the price is way up there, and is truly only for the dedicated collector, and aficionado. In all, the Clase Azul Ultra is rare and has a place in Tequila Aficionados' heart, price definitely could've been lower, heck even the price per bottle in Mexico is high, but i guess if you are willing to invest in this you know that it must be worth it, i hope to own one soon, but we'll see, there aren't that many in this first batch, so maybe the price will go down in the next, who knows. All in All, Ultra really did live up to it's name, now let's sit back and watch as other Tequila Companies try to out do, what Ultra has hands down accomplished. It's going to be fun to watch, and taste.
