Tequila Review Brand:
Don Jose Lopez Portillo
NOM: 1137 Distillery: La Cofradia, S.A. DE C.V. Importer: Mar Mar Importing, Inc Web Site: http://www.thepresidentstequila.com Don José López Portillo Reserva Especial Añejo TequilaThe President's Tequila Jose Lopez Portillo was one of Mexico's finest presidents (1976-1982). Serving his country with courage and loyalty he became known as "the last Revolutionary President" within Mexico's history. To understand the reason Jose Lopez Portillo created a Tequila with his name we must go back to his family history - a family rooted in the elaboration of Tequila. In November of 1758 Jesus Lopez Portillo y Galindo, Governor of the Villa of Tequila and the Jalisco region - ancestor of Jose Lopez Portillo gave possession of a Hacienda to Jose Antonio Cuervo in the name of King Carlos III of Spain. It was there that in 1795 Maria Magdalena Ignacia Cuervo married Vicente Albino Rojas from whom Jose Lopez Portillo also descends and founded the distillery, "La Rojena". They would become the first to receive the official concession to elaborate Tequila - wine on these lands today known as Tequila, Jalisco in the name of King Carlos IV of Spain. It was in the 19th century that the family brings a German Agronomist by the name of Franz Weber to classify the Agave. Today this Agave is known as Agave Tequilana Azul Weber, which is the founding base for fine Tequila. Mr. Weber also married into the Lopez Portillo family. These brief key points will give you the ability to understand that his ancestors were the founding fathers of what today is Mexico's strongest agro-industry through various conducts. Given these facts we went out on a quest to make and deliver the best 100% Agave Anejo Tequila blend available to consumers in the world. After a 12 year Agave growth cycle from thr volcanic soils of Jalisco using the finest Tequiliana Azul Weber Agaves and a double distillation we rest our premium 100% Anejo blend in French oak barrels for 18 months to give it a refined taste to the palate for those in the search for the perfect blend. Our bottles are true works of traditional art and heritage being hand made one by one. Our lids are made of a fine wood and are engraved by laser with the art of Jose Lopez Portillo's initials. The label shows him striding on a horse which was a gift made to him by the King of Spain during his presidency. We feel that both the consumers as well as Jose Lopez Portillo only deserve the best through this crystallized historic product. User reviews

July 22, 2008 Written by eagle 1958 - View all my reviews - Top 100 Reviewer Intintial aroma is that of its sweet maturation process inviting you to try. Its initial taste is that of a true authentic tequila, the body is complex and full flavor very satisfing, it has to be one of the smoothest most full bodied products I have ever had. the finish evokes and lets the agave flavor shine representing a complete package. For this price point I was highly impressed, the presentation is very authentic in a hand made decanter with historical background the origins of the whole tequila industry. Excellent!!!

May 15, 2008 Written by tvJefe - View all my reviews - Top 10 Reviewer The bottle first caught my eye and I had the bartender bring it over. I had never heard of Don Jose Lopez Portillo Anejo and they had just gotten it in, so I figured it was worth a shot. At $13, this was overpriced. At $5 a shot, Don Jose Lopez Portillo Anejo would be overpriced. After 2 sips, I handed it back to the bartender and told him to dump it. After both bartenders tried it, they took it off my tab. This tequila had a very smokey aroma. The initial taste was off-putting, although I couldn't quite place the flavors. The finish had a bite to it and flavors that, again, were not wholly pleasant. Unfortunately, I could find nothing redeeming about Don Jose Lopez Portillo Anejo except that it was 100% agave. I cannot recommend this tequila to anyone.
