Tequila Bar at Bally's

Latin music, colorful Southwestern decor and a festive drink menu make the Tequila Bar at Bally's the place to go for a little south-of-the-border fun.

The Tequila Bar offers an amazing array of 50 types of its namesake beverage, including dozens of versions of mixto, silver and blanco. For the true connoisseur, the bar offers rested (aged 2-11 months) and aged (one year or more) tequilas.

Tequila Bar also has an extensive margarita menu made exclusively with Sauza tequila, in a variety of flavors including banana, mango, peach, piņa colada, prickly pear, raspberry, strawberry and sweet 'n' sour. Margaritas average about $8.

If the traditional flavors are too boring for you, there's always the distinct Bally's margarita concoctions including the Golden Cadillac, Tres Compadres, Fruit-infused Patron and the Million Dollar.

And for the non-tequila drinkers, the Tequila Bar also provides a wide selection of refreshing drinks such as the Mojito and Mexican and domestic beers.

To complement the taste of tequila, the bar serves a variety of hot and cold Mexican tapas. Pasilla chili-dusted calamari, lime chipotle seared whitefish tacos, ahi tuna ceviche and chilled Pacific oyster spiked with blue agave tequila are just a few of the unique choices. Prices are reasonable with appetizers averaging $7-$10.

I have visited this place twice in the last year and a half. The first visit I was lucky enough to get Hector behind the bar. He was very friendly and very knowledgeable and introduced me to Don Julio 1942 at 15.00 a shot  (I now drink that regularly at my local favorite bar for considerably less). I don't recall the name of the bartender at my latest visit in June and he was friendly but less memorable. They have a decent mix of tequilas and a not so extensive food menu. The ambiance was nothing to attract you and if you aren't seeking out tequila you will probably pass right by. All said, it's the best selection I've found in Vegas but I've seen better elsewhere. The same can be said for the prices. The saving grace was Hector.

I found the only good thing about this place was the reasonable pricing and a good selection of tequila. The person working the counter was not very knowledgeable and you could not call out the tequila by name, but instead you had to say what row and what color the bottle was. I was not fortunate enough to have Lou behind the bar as the other reviewer. Also, the atmosphere was very lacking for a tequila bar, I felt I was at a fast food joint. All and all , once the tequila was poured everything was good.

When you break down the rating into numbers, this place gets a much lower score than it really deserves. Tequila Bar is a casino bar at Bally's on the Vegas Strip, and most people that came in while I was there did not order tequila at all. Heck, the guy next to me at the bar was drinking white zinfandel.

The selection is not all that great for a tequila bar. But they did have some of my favorites. For pricing calibration, I always use Herradura Seleccion Suprema, which was $31 here (cheapest I have ever found). The first bartender did rim my glass with salt when I ordered the Herradura Suprema, but I corrected him and I am quick to forgive. (My wife took this opportunity to remind me that I am a tequila snob again)

So what made this place stand out to me? Lou. Lou was fantastic. Knowledgeable about tequila. Made great recommendations. Offered tastes before buying. I honestly had a great time.

I didn't try the food, but the chili smelled good. The ambiance is non-existent. But I will still recommend this bar to anyone in Vegas who appreciates tequila. Just make sure to sit at the bar and talk to Lou. And tell him I said hi.

Without Lou, this bar gets a B-/B. With Lou, it jumps up to an A- easy (as long as you aren't looking for anything too rare).
