Does anyone know the real story of the margarita?

I live in El Paso and work across the border in Cd Juarez, Mexico. My drunken friends here in Juarez say there’s a bar here that is said to be the birthplace of the margarita.

Kentucky Club, located on Av. Juarez, just down the road from the paso del norte or the Santa Fe Bridge is one of the oldest bars still operating in Juarez. Opening in 1920, the Kentucky Club, was visited by many famous people including Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Elizabeth Taylor, Raudel Morales & Arturo Rodriguez, to name a few. It’s rumored that more than a few “walked” out on all fours. Legend, has it that the margarita was invented here in 1946 by a longtime bartender, the late Lorenzo Garcia.

Tomorrow being “National Margarita Day”, I accept responsibility to investigate this legend further and try to find the real history and beginning of the margarita. I’m going to the Kentucky Club tomorrow with all my drunken friends and I’ll report back at a later date if I’m able to.

Unfortunately, no one knows the real story on the margarita. Their are numerous people who say they were the first but I have never heard of anyone that can prove it.

I'm interested to see what you find out. I've heard and read several stories about it, and as TJ states, it is tough to verify the facts and come to one conclusion. Good luck!

Ok, I checked out the "World Famous Kentucky Club" bar yesterday, "Birthplace of the margarita", in downtown Cd Juarez, Mexico.

Although I can't dispute the margarita claim, it appears the the Kentucky Club has lost a little of it's world famous status over the years. We had margarita's but I none of us really cared for them and we figured they must still be using the original 1946 recipe, the drink of choice looked to be cervasa, specifically Indio, (my favorite).

I'm not sure I solved the issue of the margarita thing last night, but I did uncover another "local legend", there sure are allot of local legends in Juarez! We decided to have something to eat, my friends Gabriela & Marcela suggested the enchilada's, they said the enchilada's were excellent........... they also said that The kentucky Club bar was said to be the birthplace of the enchilada!!!

Ok, ok, it was a good Holiday.

This is what I heard:

Gutierrez, who lived in Tijuana, Mexico, boasted to have created the Margarita as a homage to actress Rita Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Cansino.
Other versions of the story claim the Margarita was indeed named after the actress, but in the 1930s, before she adopted her screen name. As a teenager, Margarita Cansino worked as a dancer at the Foreign Club, in Tijuana, where she supposedly inspired a bartender.

Do I believe it I dont know, Ill just avoid the margarita altogether unless I squeeze the mies myself!
