Next time you are in the Big Easy (New Orleans, you know) and thirsty for a shot of tequila, make your way to:
Yo Mama's (

Yo Mama's is at 727 St. Peter St., deep in the heart of the French Quarter, only a half block off Bourbon St. But the atmosphere is a million miles off Bourbon St. The only thing cheesy about YM's is their gourmet hamburgers, including the odd Peanut Butter Burger. This is a neighborhood feeling bar & grille where you will find mostly locals known by name and a few lucky tourists enjoying simple but fine food and a surprisingly extensive selection of tequila (said to be the most extensive in Louisiana with over 60 varieties).
Settle in at the bar where you can discuss your tequila selection with a knowledgeable bar man, slip $5 in the jukebox, and get ready for a hell of a fine night. This is the spot where I had my "Tequila Epiphany" when I first tasted Don Julio 1942. I was pointing out bottles and asking the bartender about each. When I pointed to the tall agave-leaf-shaped DJ 1942, he said: "Oh, that one is something special. If I ever win the lottery, the first thing I will do is buy a bottle of Don Julio 1942." Although it cost $11 per shot, I had to try it after that build-up. On first sight I was a little disappointed, because it looked pale like a silver, and I was under the uneducated impression that tequila quality went up from silver to reposado to anejo. But one sip of DJ 1942 and I changed my mind! I tasted agave in my tequila for the first time, and I have not been satisfied with any tequila since that does not present a clear agave note. And it was smooth with a nicely controlled black pepper finish.
All this occurred during the Fall of 2006, and I have been searching for a reasonably priced alternative to DJ 1942. Cabo Wabo silver may be my current favorite under $40, but I am lusting to try the Casa Noble Cristal soon. I haven't hit the lottery, but I have survived cancer, so I decided to buy a bottle of Don Julio 1942 to celebrate. I will post a detailed review soon.
But back to Yo Mama's, it is a great low-key bar amidst the false glitter of Bourbon St. The burgers are fabulous and the tequila varied and knowledgeably purveyed. A wonderful find in a surprising place.
con mucho gusto, Buzz
