Hey yall, I am your newest member from Austin, Texas. There are many good places to drink tequila here, but let me start with just one:
Manuel's Mexican Restaurants (
http://www.manuels.com/)
Manuel's has two locations here in Austin, one on Congress Ave. (downtown near the Capitol) and one in the north part of town on Jollyville Rd. Both feature a wonderful menu of mexican food and some excellent tequila and margarita drinking. I will stick to the tequila since that is the theme of this forum.
Manuel's bar has a nice range of premium tequilas available, and borrowing a feature from wine bars, they offer the tequilas in "flights". For $6.50 to $10 depending on the brand, you get a small shot each of a brand's blanco, reposado, and anejo tequilas. They are served straight up, but they do offer to chill if you would like that (I don't). I have tried flights of Tesoro, Corazon, and Espolon tequilas there, and it is a cost effective and enjoyable way to multiply your tasting. I am hoping they will start to offer "vertical flights" soon, such as three different blancos.
Manuel's also offers a variety of excellent margaritas for those who like their tequila in mixed drinks. The house margarita is made with fresh squeezed lime but unfortunately an undistinguished mixto well tequila, but it is better than the top shelf margaritas I have had at many other places. They also offer a number of higher end margaritas and some flavored margaritas. One of the most interesting flavored margaritas uses the tuna (red fruit) from prickly pear catus to produce a reddish/pink margarita with a distinctive non-citrus edge to it. Of course, they also have regular and flavored frozen margaritas for those addicted to brain freeze.
So next time you are in Austin, visit Manuel's and enjoy some great tequila and great food in a nice atmosphere. You should try to make the Sunday brunch with live music on the patio at the Jollyville location. Or try the daily 4 PM to 7 PM happy hour with drink specials and half price appetizers (try the venison chorizo gorditas with mole sauce!).
con mucho gusto, Buzz
