Default Tequila for margaritas

I learned about good tequila in Cancun from a friend of mine. Jose Cuervo Gold vs Don Julio 1942, what a difference. I've been drinking quite a few margaritas using Don Julio and Patron Silver and Patron Reposado. This is getting a little expensive. At a large liquor store in CO they had Corazon Blanco in a nice gift box with 2 1.5 shot glasses and a nice shaker mixer for 25 bucks. The bottle was 750ml. A 1.75ml bottle was 50 bucks. At another party I bought a 1.75ml Hornitos Anejo for 30 bucks on sale. I thought this was a nice tequila. What tequila do you recommend for margaritas in the 30-50 dollar range for a 1.75ml bottle. I probably like the Don Julio more then any other I've tasted, but at 90-100/bottle this is probably more for sipping then margaritas. How is Corazon vs Hornitos. from what I've read, blanco is the most recommended for margaritas. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's really a personal preference. I actually like to use reposados and blancos for margaritas. I definitely would pick the Corazon over the Hornitos, I just didn't care for the taste of the Hornitos. But that's my preference and taste, so yours may be different. A rule of thumb that I follow is, if it tastes good by itself then you can mix it in a margarita. I just feel that if it tastes bad when you sip it then it'll still taste bad in a margarita.

I dont know about 1.75L's...if you change to 750ml then you will have a lot more options. Patron is good in a margarita but you can do much much better for less money.

I prefer Reposados in my margaritas, sometimes if the blanco is really good...its almost like its not there. This happens when I use Fina Estampa or Don Augustin in my margs....they are just better blancos for sipping. Don Julio 1942 is outrageous to put in a margarita and is really more of a sin than pleasure.....

In a 25-35 dollar budget.....try Milagro Silver, 1800 Silver or Repo, Caesar Monterrey Silver, Sotol Hacienda De Chihuahua (Silver, Rep, or Anejo), Herradura or Las Trancas Repo.....and a great mixto is Tequilito Gold for 15.00 or 20 for a 1L...its great!

In a 35-55 dollar budget (which is starting to turn sacreligious because of the good tequilas I'm about to mention)....they are very good alone and in a mixed drink it is top quality...Don Valente Blanco or Reposado, 1921 Silver or Repo, Casa Noble Silver or Repo, Dos Lunas Repo, Don Abraham, Rey De Copas, Chinaco, El Tesoro, or Corazon.....

I've tried these in a marg but never will again because they were too good....Fina Estampa Blanco (30.00), Don Augustin Blanco (25.00), Jose Cuervo Reserva Platina (60.00), Don Julio 1942 (100.00), Milagro Select Barrel Reserve (90.00), Clase Azul (90.00), Don Valente Licoera Anejo (115.00) and many many more.....

This list should keep you drinking margaritas for a long long time....if you dont mind me asking, are you making the margs in the complete traditional and natural way....I hope you arent putting premium tequilas in margarita mix

I'm glad I found this place. It will save me a lot of $$$. I just started drinking tequila and margaritas in the last 3 months. I never liked margaritas because I was probably drinkin Jose Quervo Gold. My friend had me drink a shot of that and Don Julio (not 1942, just the one in the round brown bottle, 90 bucks per large bottle) what a difference. I've been hooked ever since. With all their marketing, when I get back from Cancun I buy Patron silver and reposado 1.75l go through those quickly, a 750l of Don Julio, then Hornitoes for a party, go through that and at the party go through a .750l of Patron silver as a gift. My mix is 1 shot tequila, .5 shot triple sec, 1/4 shot roses lime juice and 1/4 shot orange juice. I guess the orange juice isn't traditional but without it my margaritas would be really strong. Everyone I give them to just loves them. I guess they should with the tequila I've been using.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be buying 4-5 new tequilas this weekend to taste and saving a lot of $$$.

Ken
