Need advice traveling the Tequila, Jalisco area

Hola fellow tequila lovers, I hope to make some smart decisions based on your input. In early October, three of us plan to visit distilleries and the sites in the Tequila area. Where should we stay that is nice for the money and centrally located? We will be staying for three nights, should we rent a car to be more mobile, where is the best place to rent one? I rent a car typically in PV or Guadalajara and drive to Tequila, so I'm not sure about the whole rental process there.
