Sotol--I like it!
After reading so many good things about Sotol, I decided to try it for myself. It is a special order item at my local state run liquor store, and the order process consists of jotting down what you want, and the regional manager will bring it along the next time he/she comes down from Seattle.
After about two months of waiting, by which time I had forgotten about my order, I get the call from the liquor store. I had three bottles of HdC, one of each variety waiting for me.
Upon tasting, I found the anejo and reposodo to have a subtle nose, a very earthy/oakey and slightly sweet initial taste, with a dry, peppery finish. Not quite what I was expecting, as I was thinking tequila. I wasn't quite sure what to think, but after a couple of small (> 1oz) glasses, I was finding the (aquired ?) taste to be very appealing. The alcohol itself was quite smooth.
Now, the blanco was a whole different story. The nose was a bit less subtle, and the flavor was divine. Slightly sweet, smooth, and not hot at all. Very nice, and at only $30, it's a winner in my book.
