Maybe I'll try a Coctel Donaji when I get off work this afternoon.

I'll also try some diluted with a bit of ice to see if that will tame it down some.

If anyone has tried the Coctel Donaji, let me know what you think.

Also, I looked up the product on tequila.net and my bottle varries slightly from the one listed. Mine is 43.6% ABV or about 87 Proof. It states that its 90% San Luis Mezcal and 10% Pressed Agave Syrup...the one listed is slightly less alcohol, more sweetener and less mezcal.

http://www.tequila.net/mezcal_review...de_mezcal.html

Also, this Mezcal surprised me being a golden color. Could this be because of the pressed agave juice?

Chama used to make a Ron Cooper Smokin Margarita that was pretty good. It was a standard marg with El Tesoro Platinum and a side shot (half ounce) of chichicapa. You had the option of pouring it into your marg or drinking with, either way was great.

I'll check my DM Crema later and see what color it is, there is always that chance of a bad bottle. Any date on it?

The only 2 stamps say "CRM 0 6 - mezcal.com" and the other says 43.7% ALC by VOL.

There is also a copyright that says Del Maguey, LTD 1995-2007

So I dont believe that this bottle is "brand new"...more than likely its been on the bottom corner of the shelf forever and I've never paid attention. The bottle had dust on it, not a lot but some. Obviously it had been sitting somewhere for a little while.

But 1-3 years of bottle conditioning shouldnt change the the flavor would it?

The Crema De Mezcal I have looks like a light Anejo...almost a honey color with quite a bit of oil residue when I tilt the glass around. After reading the feedback, I dont know if it was a bad bottle or not. But the second gulp I took did make me gag, and I can handle some of the nastiest vodkas without making any sort of face so it dissapointed me very much.

If the bottle ends up being bad, the retailer should be aware and possibly the importer that brought it in. Otherwise I'm okay with the purchase, I just wont be drinking much of it and wont be looking for any other Mezcal for awhile!

I checked mine, looks like a cloudy repo or light anejo. I doubt it is bad, I think it is more of an acquired taste. Put it back on the shelf for a couple of years, you might need to kill off a few more taste buds before you can appreciate it.

Try just a splash of it in a margarita, that might work out well for a smokin marg.

Don't feel bad bn087, I've tried real hard to like mescal but it all tast like kerosene filtered through dirt to me.

I've got some expensive DM's sitting on the shelf and I just make my son drink them when he comes for a visit so he'll leave my good tequila alone.

I agree with you Patron...

I still thought it was the worst shot I've ever taken (besides Bombay Saphire {room temperature} which I will never make that mistake again!)

I will try a smokin' margarita for New Years, thats really what I bought the Mezcal for...its going to be a pretty disapointing way to bring in 2009 if I drink it straight. I sure hope the margarita comes out well. I will be using either Agaveles Blanco or Sotol Hacienda De Chihuahua Blanco.

This is my made up recipe I would like to attempt...

Sotol HDC Silver (2oz)
Juice of lime (1.5oz)
Juice of orange (1-1.5oz)
Juice of lemon (.5oz)
Agave Nectar (.5oz)
Splash Del Maguey Crema De Mezcal (.5oz)

Pour tequila, lime, orange, and lemon juice all in shaker. Shake. Pour contents into glass, add agave nectar and stir. Float Del Maguey Crema De Mezcal on top. Garnish with orange slice in glass and lime on rim. Salt will be optional.

I didnt find this recipe anywhere. I will call it a Sotol Smokin' 'Rita!

If worse comes to worse, I can always buy a bottle of Champagne before midnight!

Any feedback on the recipe would be great. I thought I should use a little extra fruit juice in the rita to balance out the sotol and mezcal. Usually I do almost equal parts of tequila and lime...but this will be a bit different.

Start working on it now, that way you can revise and have it ready for New Years...

Sorry to hear about your expereince BR, but Mezcal is harsh if you don't prepare yourself for it, and in all fairness you're not drinking a pure mezcal, it's more of a liquer type drink, so i would definitely not judge mezcal on this drink. Next time you're up this way, let me know. I've got a few bottles of the DM line that we can compare, now don't get me wrong, mezcal is by no means my favorite, but it does grow on you, you have to give your pallette an opportunity to mature and develop a tolerance, once you've "broken it in" then you can probably learn to sample mezcal, but it does take a awhile to get accustomed to, at least for me. And another thing, I don't know why you would even think about putting a creme in a margarita. That is just crazy, man that is like a squirts fest waiting to happen! lol Stick to just putting a pure agave product if you're going to go that route.

It does say Crema...but I thought that was just miel from the pressed plants...

I figured the syrup may sweeten the margarita naturally. And may allow me to cut the amount of agave nectar I would use down some...the stuff is pretty expensive around here.

I do agree of the consistancy being more like a sweet liquer...but I surely hope it doesnt turn into squirts! Like Mr. A said, I will try the recipe and tweak it if I need to. Maybe I should do the experiement tonight...it will give me the chance to figure out if its worthy of serving to friends for NYE.

I have tried Mezcal before this, it was brought back from Mexico City. I couldnt remember the name or what the bottle looked like but it tasted better than this. The oils this Crema puts off are too strong for my palate. I may like or tollerate better mezcal in the future. If I am up north I will give you a call Rosco!
