Default Porfidio Plata Issues....

I decided to purchase a bottle of Porfidio Plata, the same bottles that have been on the shelves for a long time at the liquor store down the street. I know these guys arent selling much of it but the premium market here is not good at all.

First problem, I cant find a NOM anywhere!!!!

Second problem, the cactus is purple...not blue.

Third problem, it is 39.5% ALC....I thought it had to be 40%.....

I know controversy surrounds this tequila so I'm going to start my research. I dont think this is a knock off, but I'm not cracking the seal without learning some more history. The bottle cost me 69.99...the label and everything looks correct. The bottle appears to be handblown and matches everything I've looked at. I guess curiosity is what intrigued me to purchase this...

I have pictures but the label is clear and so is the bottle and tequila...so it makes it hard to read anything...you can see the purple cactus though.

After stating all of those details I completely overlooked that it doesnt even say tequila....it says Destilado De Agave and 100% Agave on the cork and under Distilleria Porfidio on the label. LoL...what exactly am I drinking?

Harrods.com showed me a plata bottle with a purple cactus with red tips on the two outside fingers, no where does it say Tequila or 100% agave, what it does say is 'single-agave triple distilled plata'. It also has a label at the top of the bottle that says 'for the UK market'.

Check it, does it look like this?

The differences than the bottle pictured....

1) Of course there is no UK symbol...it was purchased in Texas

2) Instead of Distilleria Porfidio S.A Puerto Vallarta, it says Distilleria Porfidio "In" Puerto Vallarta.

3) The Seal has a red 3/4 circle on top that says 100% Agave, the picture above may but its not 3D to be able to tell.

4) That bottle says Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco Mexico...this bottle does not say Mexico.

5) That bottle shows "Single Agave" Triple Distilled....my bottle says 100% Agave Triple Distilled.

6) That bottle says Product of Jalisco, mine says Product of Mexico on bottom.

Overall its the same but quite a bit different if you pay attention to the details on the label...

I think its older then the current stuff but not the oldest either, I'm gonna guess 2003-05. Might be better then the newer stufff out there now. The story of theblue cactus is that they ran out of blue paint and used purple for a few batches, but thats coming from a guy on ebay though.......

I wouldn't worry about the NOM/CRT you will find more bottles without then with one. Because he couldn't call it tequila anymore without a NOM its called Destilado De Agave

There is not a NOM number as Porfidio has not made tequila for a quite a while now. They make an agave distillate-where, by whom, and what kind of agave is still a big question. Africa? Panama? Mexico?

Purple is the new color they are using.

And since it is not tequila, the can distill/dilute to any percentage that they want.

Also, Porfidio never really made tequila, they would contract with many distillers over the years and age it themselves. Martin could do this as he was married to a lady who's dad was in the Mexican government. The entire Porfidio story would make a great novel/movie/soap opera!

Well my conclusion is it is good. I will try and have a review up soon but I like it, a very unique blanco....

The story seems to make it worth the purchase too...it will be a nice convorsation piece.

Do I need to add a new bottle listing section for mystery agave spirits?

Holy mole, Batman! We purchased most of our Porfidio before really learning about tequila, so I never noticed these little oddities until you all just pointed them out. We bought the purple cactus plata in NYC a couple of months ago - I thought it was a limited or special bottling since I'd never seen the purple before. We thought we got a pretty good deal at $55, but still haven't opened it yet.

I almost bought Porfidio once, till I realized its not '100% Agave Tequila'. I hate to be a snob, but after that, I have no interest.

Well it is 100% Agave, and a lovely tequila...I'll have notes soon.

Err....actually its not tequila, Distillido De Agave...100%

I really like it though, a very pungent attack in the beginning with a smooth and creamy following. I like it a lot, I could find just as good I'll admit for 35-50.00 a bottle but you wouldnt have a good convorsation piece then. And you wouldnt have a mystery agave drink to taste....
