Default For low end, Sauza is pretty good, in my opinion

By no means am I a Tequila afficianado, but one doesn't have to be, to know that Cuervo is significantly worse than anything ever made - and that doesn't just pertain to Tequila, but perhaps any liquor. Cuervo has a very strong, dirt taste, and very little tequila flavor. I've seen some disparaging words used about Sauza, but for $21.00 for a 1.75 Liter bottle, it is infinitely better than Cuervo. For Margs, this is not a bad way to go, but I've found that it's not even too bad for sipping. In fact, a $16.00 bottle of Juarez is better than Cuervo. The really cheap stuff has very little Tequila flavor, but at least it doesn't have that Cuervo-dirt taste.

Can anyone recommend something better than Sauza in the same price range? Something with 100% or near agave?

My local liquor store used to carry a product called, Mico, supposedly made by Patron which is 51% Agave, but I thought it was very good. I cannot find it anymore at my stores.

I've never heard of Mica....

If you can stumble accross Sotol Hacienda De Chihuahua, it runs about 20-25.00 a bottle; its not tequila but Sotol but tastes similar and 100%...I like it a lot for making margaritas and sipping!

Milagro, LunAzul, Caesar Monterrey, and 30-30.

Other than those I havent found too many decent tasting tequilas for under 30, but if you come accross some let me know and if you decide to up the price range to 30+ you will have more options.

My favorite at this time for under 30 is Three Amigos. Its really a great tequila. Both their blanco and anejo. An 'A' grade in my opinion. The blanco is 28 bux and the anejo is 32. You just cant go wrong.

My favorite liquor store has it, u can get online as well..

I know I always up the ante, but for under $40, Pueblo Viejo Orgullo Anejo can't be beat. Certainly some mellowers in there but a fine product at a reasonable price for an anejo.

I like (Sauza) Hornitos! It's really good for UNDER $20!!!!!
Tres Generaziones is another OK Sauza one....
Just "OK" cuz it's not under $20!

Hornitos: It's not a Don Julio, but it's half the price (or less) and still makes a great Margarita.

Ive had Pueblo Viejo blanco.. $18 bux, u cant beat it. And it still has a good agave essence.

I was at a huge party for friends. There was no way I was gonna spend more than that on a bunch of non tequila drinkers!LOL

I have one more to add to the list of suggestions, it is Distinqt reposado tequila. Trader Joe's carries it and it is not only 100% agave but it is $19.99. It makes a great mixer and not bad for sipping. I can't seem to get past that certain unpleasant taste that Suaza tequilas have.

Hey raiderj,
I thought I was the only one who used Distinguido for Margaritas. I can purchase the anjeo for only $19.99 and although I rarely ever waste an anejo in a margarita, at that price it's no big deal! Have you or anyone else ever sipped the Distinguido anjeo? I thought it tasted rather smooth for the price. Personally I thought it was better than Sauza Tres Generaciones, without that "chemical" taste, for a third of the cost!

Hey totally,
I'm talking about Distinqt tequila not Distinguido. Distinqt's NOM is 1107, while Distiguido's is 1413, so they are two different brands of tequila. I've never tried the Distinguido.
