Default Aging Barrel Options (wood)

I received my aging barrel yesterday and would like some suggestions on what to put into my barrel.

One thing I was thinking about was Don Ramon Reposado. I received a bottle of this as a gift reciently and was very surprised at how much I liked it, and for about $12.00 a bottle I thought it might be a good option to try.

Any other suggestions?

Wouldn't you want to start with a blanco and age it to a reposado and then an anejo - stopping when you got the best taste?

I would also start with a blanco. A good choice would be 30-30 for $18 or go to Ueta's and get 1921 for $22. Don Julio Blanco is only $21.

bn, Ueta's is the duty free stor in El Paso, they have the 1921 products and the price is really good, 1921 Reserva Especial for $30.00

I agree about using blanco but I was so impressed by the Don Ramon, I thought that might be interesting, and I can't beat the price.

The 30-30, sounds interesting, I didn't think of the 1921, but you're correct at the duty free store it's very reasonable.

After aging several tequilas in my barrels, I have a few things to pass on:

Use an inexpensive spirit to start, as you may lose more than you think...

Taste often, and keep an extra bottle of whatever you are aging to compare and top off the barrel.

Keep a record of dates and notes on your barrel samplings...

Lots of wood flavor in the first batch.

More a matter of taste, the cheapest 100% blanco you can find that has the best flavor to your palate. Try some El Gran Jubileo Blanco if you can find it, should be around $20 or slightly under.

Very good choice, I've looked at the El Gran Jubileo Extra Anejo but have not purchased it yet.

That might be an interesting place to start...see I didn't even think of that brand.

This is why you're "MrAgave"      Thanks

If you can find it, pick up a bottle of LunAzul...that should be interesting and I dont think LunAzul even has an aged product on the market at the moment.

I wish there was a Duty Free shop around here, I know they are at the border but that is a great deal man...if El Paso wasnt a 12 hour drive for me, I'd be hitting that place up as much as possible.
