Default My first real Tequila tasting

So the new mexican restaurant in my town (Just Tacos) is having a tequila tasting party on December 10th and my wife just bought a place for me and my brother (visiting from AZ for the holidays). We'll be having some kinds of seafood dishes cooked with Tequila, while we're tasting Gran Centenario Reserva, Patron Gran Platinum, Corazon, Milagro family (anejo, repo, blanco). There will also probably be some 4 copas, Chaya and Corralejo. Plus some of the featured tequilas will be available for purchase at cost as well as there will be some door prizes. Monday night doesn't seem like a good night to me, but I happened to have taken the week off to take pics at the Pipe Masters surf contest so I'm off anyway Unfortunately, I've had all these tequilas before but it should still be a blast. And you know I'll be taking a stack of the Tequila.net review forms and my Reidels.

Sounds like a good lineup for a tasting, good mix of different brands and types. Does your bro like the agave spirits too, or are you planning on converting him that night?

And bottles at cost, can't beat that, as long as "cost" is less than the local liquor store...

My brother is the one that got me and my wife started into tequilas. Started for him when he moved to Arizona. But we were the ones who showed him what a difference real tequila glasses make. He's also bringing me a couple bottles from AZ I haven't tried yet and can't get in Hawaii, Manana Anejo and a surprise Can't wait!

Sounds like fun Ricardo, i hope you and your brother have a great time, and enjoy the seafood meals, just make sure they don't just lightly drizzle tequila on it, but rather drown the seafood with that delicious spirit!. and take some pics of your first tequila dinner, we'd love to see them.

We just returned from the tasting and it was a blast. We tried Milagro select barrell blanco, reposado and Anejo (I came home with a reposado bottle for my collection), Don julio 1942 and Real, HDSS (which was different than the last time I tried it), JCRF 2007 (really like the design of the new box), a discontinued reposado La Cava Don Agustin that was interesting and to finish 1800 Gran Reserva Del Nuevo Milenio. Will post pics and further comments tommorow.

One of the interesting things of the night was to try Don Julio 1942 and Real side by side. Although the Real is noticably smoother it seems to lack the subtle flavors of the 1942 and so I think I might prefer the 1942 even before considering the price. Am I crazy?

The 1942 is my go to dink right now. I prefer the 1942 over the Rey Sol and the 4 Copas.....Although, the others are still wonderful. I think the Real is fantastic, but for the money the 1942 is the way to go.

I like them both, but the price tag on the Real is a turn off, as it is for most.

DJ considers the Real to be the purfect Blend of what a Anejo Tequila should, their master piece. So I guess they price it to that idea.

If the two were priced the same, I would drink Real over 42 all day everyday. The Real is the true essence of the DJ tequila family and unlike the 42 does not seem to have what many call "magic" in it. However, given price, I do not like the Real $150-200 more than the 42. I personally think the Real should be priced at around $200, it just seems overpriced for what you get.
