Has anyone here been to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic lately? I'm planning a retirement celebration trip to Punta Cana, in April. I know the Eastern Carribean is all about rum. I might taste that too, but I'm wondering about the availability of good tequila there. Can anyone recommend a tequila bar? We'll be staying at the Hard Rock Resort and Casino. I assume they will have a tequila brand or two, but are there any other tequila bars there I should visit? I've heard they're not big on tequila in DR, but don't know.

Haven't been to Punta Cana but you are correct, it's all about rum in the DR. Here's a website that could help you research any rum purchases:
Welcome to the - Ministry of Rum If there is no tequila available to buy, invest in a couple of rare aged rums. While tequila is my favourite, there are times when aged rum on ice just hits the spot. If you see Havana Club Barrel Proof Rum in the DR (most likely in the duty free), buy it. It's about $35-45 bucks and is insanely good. |

I was down there this past September and the only thing I saw close to tequila was Jose Cuervo. I didn't look into any tequila bars because you usually don't want to leave the resort area anyway. While I love tequila I will not pass up good rum, and they have very good rum on the DR. Brugal is usually what you will see and I recommend giving it a shot. Much better than cheap Captain Morgan.

I've come to correct the information - Havana Club Barrel Proof is now Seleccion des Maestros - about 40 Convertible Pesos in Cuba, not sure what it would cost in the DR.
I'll be investigating further shortly.
