For those of you not on the El Tesoro email list...
Aged for seven full years, El Tesoro Aniversario is an “Extra AnejoEwith a warm, true flavor and a long, soft finish that opens up as you let it sit. The spicy agave stays in your throat, accented by hints of chocolate and vanilla, oak and almonds. This rare, once-in-a-lifetime tequila can’t be widely distributed. Only about 20,000 bottles will be available in the U.S. To find out if there’s one near you, please visit: http://www.eltesorotequila.com/70 |

I had heard that after 3 years it didn't matter much? Maybe that isn't true.
Off topic: Can you explain the process you go through we tasting the tequila's for review? Do you drink a sip or a lot? Let it sit in mouth or straight down? Etc... Thanks! |

I stayed away from the reserva anejos for awhile, all of them seemed over oaky, but now the new extra anejos seem to still have some good agave flavor and other surprises besides wood. Worth trying I would say, and hopefully you can sample it at a bar before shelling out several hundred on something that might not be worth it.

you're right, i've always been a fan of el tesoro, and can't wait to get my hands on a bottle, and anything over 3 yrs, usually has a strong taste, but now they are refining and taking that right out, without taking with it the natural taste of the agave.

It's interesting. I have tasted all the El Tesoro and Tapatio products.
I've had the unique opportunity to taste two versions that we won't see in the states for a long time, if ever. One was the Tapatio Reserva (can be bought at Wiskey Exchange) which is aged for 5 years in french oak barrels, as well as the Cigar Blend (will eventually become the El Tesoro Extra Anejo). This one is aged for 5 years in an American Oak barrel. Both of these tequilas would rate very well next to the likes of Chinaco Emp 30th. I had the opportunity to taste what become the first bottling of the Anniversario when we visited the distillery in April, as well as being lucky enough to attend the anniversary event a few weekends ago. I have to say, I like the 5 yrs better than the 70th (7 yrs). I think there is a maxium point a tequila has to reach it's peak taste in a barrel. After that 'peak', it mellows. I definitely think the 70th is going to be much mellower than most anticipate. However, I do NOT think it will disappoint (I know that the Negro disappointed many) |

I think the barrels made a big difference too the Tapatio Reserva and the Cigar blend where brand new deep char barrels and the 70th is used whiskey(?) barrels. All three are great but I think new barrels are the way to go. Have you started your experiment yet Cali?
