Cool

So I'm coming up on my Cancun trip. Ive read the thread in the Members Area, but I thought I might get a little more exposure in the Public Thread.

So far the 2 I definitely have on my short list to track down are:

Maracame (Repo or Anejo depending on which I like more) and Clase Azul (Repo assuming there is no way I'll afford the Extra Anejo even in MX).

For certain I'll be trying many tequilas especially since my hotel has a tequila bar in it and its all inclusive. But I always welcome suggestions.

Logistically I will only be able to bring back 3 bottles back, so what is a good one to look out for.

If it helps, some of my favorite brands are Casa Noble, Asombroso, 1921 and Tierras.

Thanks

One that I recommend to many is Reserva de los Gonzalez, a brand made by the sons of Don Julio Gonzalez, Eduardo & Francisco. I'm kind of surprised that it hasn't made its way over the border yet.

I just returned from Cancun on the 6th. The hardest part was finding the tequilas I was searching for Clase Azul Reposado was easy to find and many offered a taste. The "Tequila Museum" was lame, don't waste your time. The best source was Hacienda Tequila in the mall with Chocalate City or something like that. The had the Anejo but were asking $2000 US so I skipped it.

Oh, by the way, i brought back around 8 Liters of alcohol. I put the expensive 2 Liters in her luggage and the rest in mine. I filled out the cutoms form and was waiting to pay any additional fees. I waited for someone to ask if I had anything to declare but no one ever did . . .

Awesome. Hopefully I'll be that lucky. History shows though that I just have an "up to something" look.

When I came back from Guadalajara, my partner and I had about 7-8 bottles between us. On the customs form it didn't ask how many bottles, it just asked to declare a total value. I put a reasonable amount (which is what we paid) that wasn't overly excessive and no one asked us anything when we came back to Calif. I think if the total value you declare coming back in isn't over the top they won't bother much with it. Or at least that's what seemed to happen to us.

This is my experience as well. A caveat, though, is that the rules vary depending on which state you clear customs in (NOT your home state or final destination, if you have a domestic layover). I strongly recommend against flying US Air through Phoenix, even though they tend to have the best deals for us West Coasters, because Arizona's limit is one liter! I have gone through with more, but it is nerve racking, and worth paying $40 extra on your ticket to avoid even the possibility of having treasure confiscated, IMHO.

One thing I should add, the inspectors in Mexico will spot check to make sure the bottles are still sealed per their regulations so don't expect to enjoy any of your purchases until you do reach home.

Also, I recorded prices on my iPhone at the various stores. You should make a trip to Walmart during your trip and compare. For instance, the cheapest I saw Chile Caliente anywhere was around 400p but it was 293p at Walmart.
