Default Mezcal.....Expensive

I just came across some Mezcal that was very expensive. What's up with that

Has anyone tried the following Mezcals? I am curious if I should buy some or not. There are no bars or resturants around me that have Mezcals to try.
Del Maguey Pechuga $180
Scorpion 5 year $155
Scorpion 7 year $192

I have tried them all, and yes they are expensive, but no more than the ultra-premium tequilas. Anything from Scorpion and Del Maguey are worth sampling. I personally like the Scorpion 5 year over the 7 year. And the pechuga is wonderful. Give them a try...

Have you tried mezcal before, blagave? I personally can't stand it. To me it tastes like I am drinking dirt. (when I'm trying to be nice, I call it "earthy")

Yes, I have 4 or 5 differnt bottles of the Del Maguey. I agree that it has a harsher taste than tequila, but then again, I have had some awful tequila. I like to experiment, so I think I will try some new versions.

I think the more straight liquor you drink :P.... over time you build up a tolerance and maybe a liquor you did not like in the beginning tastes good now. I found that to be the case with Sotol Hacienda, which is very good, especially for the price.

From my experience, El Mezcalito is pretty harsh. METL 2012 is good, I had a chance to sample that entire lineup this last summer.

I have the pechuga and the 5 year old scorpion at Malo.
I also have a private bottle of the Del Maguey chichicapa that was aged for 12 years in glass then one year in the Stag's Leap Cabernet barrel. Not too many of these were made. If you come into Malo, or anyone from Tequila.net I will get a taste of this out to you. I keep it hidden in my office so I have to be here, just call, make reservations, let me know etc...
