Default Why so little interest in Mezcal???

It seems apparent from the dates of the posting in this thread that Mezcal does not draw much attention. Only a few from 2008 and just a couple from 2009, so far.

I would really like to learn a little about Mezcal as I learn about Tequila. Is there any source for more information on Mezcal? Is there a top 10 listing somewhere?

Any info will be appreciated!

The best way I can describe Mezcal is that it is much bolder than Tequila in every way, stronger aromas, stronger flavors, etc. It helps to have an experienced palate, otherwise it may be awhile before you give it another chance. And since most brands still cook / smoke the Agave in earth pits, it helps if you like smoky flavors.

I personally like Mezcal, just as much or more than Tequila. I have approx. 40 listed here:

Mezcal Reviews - Tequila Brands, Ratings and Reviews - TEQUILA.net

Favored brands include Del Maguey, Scorpion, METL 2012, Sombra, and Jaral de Berrio

Check out Mezcal.com and some of the videos here.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I do enjoy smokey flavors when I'm in the mood. Many of the Scotches I enjoy have very peaty/smokey flavor profiles.

I had noted your favored brands but have no idea of what the sell for yet. Can you recommend one or two of any that you enjoy, in a moderate price range of about $30 a bottle?

Search for "metl" at HiTimeWine.net, you can get their Mezcal for around $35, and their Tequila is excellent too.

Also, you can get scorpion silver at ShopperVineyard.com for about $35 as well.

I recommend Del Maguey Chichicapa, but that costs around $70.

Thanks again!

Before I do any online buying, I'll be taking a look at the Lee's Discount Liquor Centers here in the Las Vegas Valley. They are the largest and have 12 location, all of which are huge. I have seen the Tequila/Mezcal section many times but never checked it out. There are at least 50 or more bottles on display. I'll be taking a close look over the next few days.

I would start at the top and work my way down. DM is by far the best product out there (IMO) and one of the few times where you can say "You pay for what you get". Most mezcals run between $40-50 a bottle, which when it's all said and done is only ~20 less than DM's, and when you categorize them this way, that $20 difference seems a small price to pay for the massive leap in quality tha extra dollars buy you.

Thanks for your comments. That's probably very good advice with Mezcal, since there doesn't seem to be that many brands out there compared to Tequila.

I can say that I would love to try Mezcal or Sotol, but neither seems readily avaliable here in PA. From what I have heard and read, though, I would love Mezcal.

Default Top Of The List

A Soltol, Hacienda de Chihuahua, ranks near the top of Tequila.net ratings by both editors and members in the tequila section. If you have it in your area it is a must buy.

No problem, Ron will ship to PA. I would suggesting getting one of each. They come with a cool basket, clay cup and shipping is included (plus no tax!). I've bought and shipped thru his web page several times w/o any problems, as I'm sure many others here have, too.

Mezcal Del Maguey - Main Menu

Enjoy!
