My personal opinion of Mezcal is haunted by DM Crema De Mezcal. I did not appreciate this at all. I would be willing to try some better Mezcal but would not recommend this as a starter. DM is a wonderful brand and I was told that Mezcal can be an aquired taste but mine was way too sweet. I need something a bit more classic.

Creama de mezcal is not mezcal. Just as casa 1921 tequila cream is nothing like 1921 tequila. I think I'd hate tequila if my only experience with it was 1921 cream tequila. My suggestion is to throw out any perceptions about mezcal that the creama product left with you and revisit mezcal anew. Mezcal is excellent stuff IMO and gives you a historical perspective of what tequila once was and how far it's come over the last 200 yrs.

I don't know from experience but as I mentioned, I would give it another go around. The Crema was more like a mix of rubber cement and agave nectar...it just didn't hit the pallate the way I thought it would. I may break down and try something like Scorpian or Monte Alban which is in an affordable price range and would probably give me a better opinion of Mezcal.

Not to sound like a mezcal snob, but scorpion and Monte Alban are to mezcal as Jose Cuervo Gold is to tequila. Avoid mezcals with bugs in them like you would avoid the plague. No self-respecting Mexican would ever drink something with a bug in it, I don't know why Americans think they should (or why they ever would!?!). If price is an issue, consider other mezcals such as; Los Danzantes, Del Maestro, Real Magueyes, or Metl, none of which contain bugs and some are quite good! But that said, DM is still the best of the best!

I think I would just try what I can find. I'm not looking for the perfect Mezcal, just a product to get the feel of. To turn my interest to tequila, I started with Cuervo and Patron which lead to my liking.

But thanks for the advice, I will see what I can find off of the better rated mezcals on tequila.net.

Perhaps you can find a tasting or a bar to try it, bn. I was lucky enough to be at my local liquor store and the manager offered me a taste of DM and it was ok, not really for me. I remember it being very smokey and strong alcohol burn and I think 100 proof or something like that which probably accounted for the burn. I'm sure if I tried other varities I would find some that I like, but I'll just stay with tequila for now.
