This is another nice product from Cesar Monterrey. I've reviewed the blanco and the anejo, so I thought that I would give my two cents on the reposado. The blanco was hotly spicey and fruity, with an interesting array of other flavors, but not the smoothest tequila out there. (Actually, in hindsight, I wish I had rated the blanco higher than I did). The anejo also had an acutely spicey agave taste, but the time it spent in the bourbon-cured oak cask imparted a sweet richness. The bourbon touch my not be to the taste of the agave juice purists, but I love it in the context of that spirit and it is hands down my favorite tequila anejo. The reposado sits in between these two. You still get most of the spicey agave sparkle of the blanco and some of the bourbon sweetness of the anejo. Overall, spicey, rich and smooth, and better than 90 plus percent of the reposados out there. Generally, I am not a reposado fan, but if I had to go with a reposado, this would be in my top three (along with Casa Noble and 1921).

I rated the price a 93 because I know of a store in Austin that sells it at around $30 per bottle, but a store I visited at South Padre Island charged $52 per bottle, and those are the only two liquor stores that I am aware of that carry Cesar Monterrey. So, what it will set you back is not clear, but the bigger question is whether you can find it all. Cesar Monterrey tequilas appear to be fairly hard to find.

Initial taste is a bit rough, then earth, agave and vanilla, topped by a smooth finish. An above-average tequila, but a bit pricey for what you get. I understand that Herradura can vary a little in taste and quality from bottle to bottle. I was a little disappointed, especially since a trusted liquor proprietor in Matamores recommended it to me. Perhaps the bottle I sampled was not one of the best examples of this reputed classic.

What a truly fine spirit this is. It is my current favorite anejo. Riedel tequila glasses are made for this this kind of quality spirit, with its sweet, organic aroma. Initial taste is acutely spicey and rich, with honeyed agave dominating at midpalate. It's smooth on the finish, leaving a sweet, spicey, agave taste that lingers and makes you (well, at least me) look forward to the next glass. Wine Enthusiast rates this as one of its 50 Best Spirits of 2006 (not just among tequilas, but all spirits) and it's easy to taste why. I only wish that this tequila was a little easier to find.

I picked up a bottle of Tezon anejo after reading a favorable review in the Austin Chronicle. My wife and I drank it over a period of couple of months, mostly having an oz or two in a tequila glass before heading out for entertainment or football games. It's been a couple of weeks since I last drank any of this anejo, so I don't quite remember the aroma, but I do remember the taste and I had a very favorable impression. Initial taste is earth and agave with oak overtones, followed by a silky wash of caramel and vanilla. Smooth finish. The taste was great, but equally as important to me was that the buzz was quite clean, like that you would get from a quality vodka, only with the loco thing you get with tequila. Frankly, when drinking tequila, the alcohol high is just as important to me as the taste. Overall, this anejo ranks in the top quarter of tequilas that I have had and I have been a consumer of quality tequilas both in Texas and in Mexico for over twenty years. That makes me curious as to why my experience was so different than that represented by the previous review. Are there differences in the batches perhaps, or maybe just the tastes of the reviewers?

The aroma of this blanco is sweet and flowery and really quite surprising in that is very pleasant. The initial taste is a blast of earthy agave and the body is substantial. This is not among the ranks of the smoothest tequilas, but I don't expect that so much from a blanco. The finish is also way above average for a blanco with an tingly alcohol bite and a flourish of flavors, cognac-like in its effect. I bought this for margaritas, but wound up sipping it. Overall this is an impressive blanco. I would love to try the Cesar Monterrey anejo, if I can find it.
