Tasted 10/26/07 side by side with Gran Patron in Riedels. Looking at the two tequilas in the glass, the clarity and legs were exactly the same. First smell picked up a sweet citrus, and with a deeper, slower nose I noticed a honey and a slight agave and alcohol burn. First taste had moderate heat, sweet, very smooth and mild with no bitterness. With the second taste I got more agave and a peppery sweetness. The finish was a super clean agave favor with a low to moderate heat and alcohol end. I was surprised at how close it was to The Gran Patron in smoothness and drink ability. This is very sip able tequila. Tezon went for a special presentation with this nice bottle. The dual side metal plaques, necktie hang tag and individually numbered bottles. (The genuine Tahona wheel/cork combo stopper seems a magic trick in itself!) I paid $62.00 but have since seen it online for nearly half that. I'm sure the packaging plays a part in the higher price but I feel this tequila is on par with some of the best blancos. Overall I was very impressed and think it's definitely worthy of your consideration. If you like your blancos on the stronger side you may not love it. It's going to be one of my new favorites.

Tasted 10/26 in a side by side comparison with Tezon Blanco in Riedels. Initial nose is very pleasant with agave and almost no alcohol. The first taste had mild heat and agave with a bigger 2nd taste bringing forth more earth and sweet agave with a slightly green taste. The body was fairly thin and light with a straight clean agave flavor. Very smooth. It's finish had a very drinkable moderate alcohol heat with a sustained strong agave presence throughout. I like this tequila very much and would sip it neat anytime without a problem. Of course, it goes without saying that this tequila has one of the most super special impressive presentations going, (Crystal Bottle, Velvet Black Bag, and Curley Maple Box) and I'm sure it's got a lot to do with the price but that being said, I recommend you go ahead and get a bottle on sale and you can be sure that it will impress your friends and your taste buds when you're in the mood it sip a Blanco/Platinum tequila.

Tequila Herradura Silver Blanco Suave, NOM 1119. Tasted 10/11/07 The label says it had been aged 40 days and the slightly off clear color shows it. I don't think the short aging did much to help it though. There was an aroma that I coudn't quite put my finger on, just different than what I would call bright or clean. It was almost an earthy chemical scent. Initial taste was bitter agave and peppery. Finished without much burn, fairly mild going down barely taking my breath. It had very little if any noticeable sweetness or fruit that might have made it more enjoyable. A very consistant raw note that left me wanting. Overall a fairly unremarkable silver tequila.

This anejo is a clear medium amber color with a sweet medium aged pure agave nose. I also noticed some wood, vanilla, and carmel notes. The intial taste was what I expected from the aroma. It has a fairly light mouth feel with a strong complex alcohol burn. Its smoothness made it easy to sip but it changed going down with a long finish that left medium agave heat in the throat. There was more agave going down than on the tip of the tongue. I kept thinking smokey agave, spicy agave. Definitely not too sweet with a true agave dominance overall. It comes in a very nice bottle and a special cylindricial tube package that is high class all the way.

My wife and I enjoyed a great mexican meal, nice atmosphere, and I got to try a couple of new tequilas by the shot that I had never tried before at this restaurant on a recent vacation to Ocean City, MD. It was packed with alot of happy looking people. I could tell it was a mixture of locals and out of towners. We didn't know what to expect with the meal but I must say it was some of the best mexican food we've had. As for the tequila bar, of course I had to try a Margarita, and I went for the house one which was very good. I wish I had gone for the Patron house special version. I also decided to spring for a couple special shots of some expensive anejo tequilas (not sure how to compare the cost because I've never bought it by the shot before) but I bought a shot of the El Tesoro Paradiso and the Heradura SS. The Paradiso was $19 and the Heradura SS was $30. They had over 100 top shelf tequilas offered and I must say the bar looked pretty nice. I can't remember which one it was but I believe the most expensive one was $90 a shot. Overall I was very impressed and am looking forward to my next trip to OC. Both tequilas I tasted were very good but I liked the Heradura SS better.
